Behind the Scenes of My Creative Process: From Sketch to Finished Painting
1. Intro: Set the scene
Ever wonder how a blank canvas becomes a finished piece of art you’d want hanging in your living room? Today I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes peek at how I go from "what if…" to "done and drying." Spoiler: there’s lots of stepping back to see how things are going, trying to trust the process, repainting areas, and finally enjoying the piece in the end.
2. Inspiration: Where it all starts
Every piece starts with a feeling or idea. Sometimes it’s something that just sticks with me, a color palette I can’t get out of my head, or just a mood I want to bring into a space—like peace, joy, or bold confidence. I also think about where this piece might live—a cozy living room? A hallway that needs a little warmth? That helps guide the right setting.
3. Sketch phase: Aka the “ugly phase”
I always start with a loose sketch, either on paper or straight on the canvas. This stage is messy, imperfect, and full of chicken scratches—but it’s where I’m able to get a good concept of how this will look on canvas, and helps me put the pieces together a little better. It’s actually a pretty exciting part for me because while it’s no where near perfect yet, it helps me imagine the end piece better. I get so excited to actually add color and start painting!
The photo that started it all, and the painting it turned into. A little wild, a little imperfect, but full of character.
4. Color blocking & layers
Once I’ve got the layout down, I start layering in colors—blocking out big sections to build structure. I’ll test colors, adjust tones, and go back and forth until it feels right. There’s a lot of stepping back, squinting, tilting my head, and asking my husband, “Does this sky look weird or am I just in my head?” This is also the part where I remind myself: "It’s not supposed to look good yet" (And usually I need that reminder on repeat).
5. Detailing & finishing touches
This is my favorite part - where the painting comes to life. I add textures, refine edges, and bring in all the little things that give the piece character. Whether it’s brushy texture in trees or tiny glints of light in the sky, these are the final touches that (hopefully) make you stop and stare. I’m a very detail oriented person so this part will usually take me longer than it needs to… but it’s very worth it in the end. Sometimes the more you add, the more the painting comes to life - but sometimes you can overdo which I’ve learned the hard way… many times…
6. Sealing & signing
After everything’s dry, I seal the piece to protect it and sign it with love. It’s like sending a little piece of my heart out into the world—equal parts exciting and vulnerable.
I hope this gave you a little glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes in my art world. Every piece is made with intention, layers of meaning, and a lot of messy love - if that’s even a thing lol.
